Lessa

Lessa

The ancient city of Lessa, whose name denotes a rocky place, was 3 km far from the archaeological site of the Epidaurus Theater. It was built at the foot of Mount Arachnaion, which is the highest mountain in the region, reaching an altitude of 1200m.

According to the geographer Pausanias, who visited the city, the temple of goddess Athena and her oxen were positioned prominently in its citadel. Nowadays the ruins of the ancient city have been found near Lygourio. According to excavations, the area was inhabited from prehistoric times, and remains of archaic and classical fortifications have been found as well.
