The Sunken city
The Sunken City
The Sunken City is located in Archaia Epidavros, within a close distance from the Small Ancient Theater of Epidaurus, on the beach “Kalymnios”. It was discovered in 1970 thanks to an aerial photo taken from a hot-air balloon. Although not very well known, it is very impressive and easily accessible.
Just 45 meters from the coast and 2 meters deep there are the remains of a rural Roman villa (Villa Rustica). It was inhabited by wealthy Romans of the area and their staff. Due to the presence of 30 huge earthenware jars at the bottom, it is inferred that the building was also used as a storehouse where large quantities of agricultural products were stored.
